We were retained by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) to develop a long-term environmental action plan for Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. This plan focusses on six key areas in support of the GTAA’s environmental policy – climate change, carbon neutrality and emissions, strategic energy use, water management, natural environment, and waste management. Our team is developing strategic plans for each focus area to provide a clear pathway for the GTAA to achieve it’s stated sustainability goals within their 2021 Environmental Policy. Services include conducting baseline assessments for the focus areas; overseeing peer review and analysis of current strategies; identifying priority areas and related goals; preparing cost/benefit analysis for programs and targets; and recommending systems to monitor performance and communicate key metrics.

The work included preparing the GTAA’s Strategic Energy Use Action Plan, Climate Change Resilience Plan,Carbon Neutrality & Emissions Action Plan, Natural Resources Action Plan, Water Management Action Plan, and Zero-Waste Action Plan.

Our team was subsequently selected, along with two other consulting firms, to deliver an innovative and holistic solution to help achieve GTAA’s decarbonization objectives and meet its best-in-class goals. This work involves supporting the GTAA’s ambitious program to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to achieve decarbonization goals across three areas – lighting systems, clean heat energy services at its central utility plant, and deployment of on-site solar photovoltaic and electric vehicle charging at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

AECOM’s innovative ScopeX digital platform was used on this assignment to evaluate various materials and methods, and assess their ability to reduce energy use, draw on renewable energy sources and reduce the GTAA’s overall carbon impact.
